Chapter 4
Monday went by fairly smoothly, no Jack or April at all,
and a few of the workers even gave Chris some flowers
and some candy. Chris felt better and did pretty good
with his work, fixed 3 amplifiers not including the RCA,
3 VHS machines, 5 CD players, 5 DVD players, and
10 Video CD players.
Then -----
Tuesday.
The union members decided to strike.
Chris was pulled from his desk whilst in the
middle of unscrewing the panel to a desktop
radio and they made him drop the screwdriver
and all this before Steve knew what was going on.
They shuffled Chris this way and that way
and he could not see,, and all these questions
from a bunch of 'those noisy yelling people'
as Chris called them.
He was back in the dingy meeting room for awhile,
they told him to 'dip into his reserves' because
they were going on strike.
Chris kept saying "I wanna fix something! I wanna
fix something!" But no one would let him
go back to his workbench, people just kept
shuffling him into one car and then the
other, Chris's vision grew dim, his head
fell over in the car.
When the lights came back on, it was
about 1Pm Chris was running low on
power from not being allowed to take
his lunchbox, and he was dragging everywhere
he was pushed or shuffled, and the idiots
doing the shuffling had the nerve to be
impatient with him because of what
they caused.
A loud man and woman who were as bad as
the speaker with the P.A. system finally
brought him back to work, but did not
let him go in, Chris did not understand
why everyone was outside.
"Is this a fire drill?" "Can I go back
inside now?" "When is it done?"
"I gotta go poddy!"
Chris kept pulling on people's sleeves
but all he got was "Soon" or a grunt.
The loud couple put a big sign in his
hands and made him walk around
in a big circle with all the other workers.
Chris tried to walk, but he was really out
of power. "I didn't get my money, I need
to go get groceries!" "Can I get my
money now!?"
But no one would listen, they just kept
shuffling him around and around.
"I'm hungry!" Chris protested and tripped
on something on the sidewalk, fell down,
and bashed up his knee, and with that
came a loud wail and many tears.
You could tell Chris had good lungs
because of the loud wail he could produce,
he could outwail a baby sometimes.
No one helped him up nor even tried
to make him feel better, they just walked
around him or said "Get up and stop
acting like a baby!" This only upset
Chris more and brought more wailing.
Finally someone told him he could go
home.
Wednesday, the same thing, more walking
around in a circle, but this time Chris had
his lunch with him. And some extra in paper
bags that he brought. Chris could put away
alot of food, yet he did not gain any weight,
he was a little chubby but that is all.
They would not let Chris go past an invisible
line, in the parking lot, back to his workbench,
so, Chris sat there watching the people walk
around and around and ate sandwiches,,
drank apple juice, koolaid, and Dr. Pepper
wondering when he could go back inside,
so he took out his crayons and coloured
for awhile, then he lay down under the
skinny tree in the parking lot, and took a nap.
Chris was finally awakened by someone
kicking the sole of his shoe and saying
"Hey kid, its time to go home."
So Chris got on the bus and left.
When he got home, he noticed that his
cabinets and his refrigerator hadn't
much food left in them, so he went
to Mr. Hong's grocery to buy some food,
but when he got in his pocket,, he
found no cash, and he got mad
and stomped out. Mr. Hong looked
sadly out after Chris wondering
what was wrong.
Chris was dragging by the time he got
home. Mrs. O'Shay asked him what
was wrong.
"I don't feel good Mrs. O'Shay,,
they won't give me my money,,
and I'm hungry." Chris said
weakly.
"Well," she offered, "Why don't you
come over and have dinner with us?"
"Thank you!" Chris was never
so grateful in his life.
After mostly colouring and
watching Rugrats with Joshie,,,
as Chris could not play as much
as he usually did,, he went home
to discover that his medicine ran out.
"Oh no!! I don't have any more heart pills!"
Now Chris was really toast.
If he did not take his heart pills he would
surely get sick at the circle-walk tomorrow,
it was summer and about 90 F out there.
He was also very low on diapers,,
he had only two left. One for tonight
and one for tomorrow but in the daytime
he needed two.
