Chapter Two
When Chris came into work that day,
Jack and April stopped him again and
reeled for fear of being slammed,
but Chris managed to screech loudly
to a stop again. "Hi guys!" he beamed.
"Hey there sport,, you ready for the meeting?"
Jack asked hopefully.
"What meeting?" Asked Chris.
"Well," continued Jack, "All union members
are required to attend union meetings
on Tuesays."
"But I have to finish putting in that
flatpack on that RCA!" Said Chris
disdainfully.
"Well, now that amplifier will be there
this afternoon, it's not going to walk
away." Said Jack plasticly reassuringly,
"We have a meeting to go to, so come on,
sport!"
"But my name's Chris." Chris corrected
Jack.
"Right." Jack agreed with a plastic smile.
Chris was led across the
street to another building and
into a large room with
crappy old flourescent lights, peeling
paint on concrete walls, and a scratched
up wooden floor, but he noticed the
coffee and juice and doughnuts at the
back of the room, and went straight for them,
and picked out 5 "mini doughnuts", and
began munching them down like no tomorrow,
slurping his juice, chewing and burping.
Jack and April had to do all they could to
pull him away from the refreshments
table and to a rickety,
wobbly, old metal school chair.
The speaker of the meeting boomed through the
P.A. system:
"Union workers UNITE!" and the whole room
except for Chris applauded loudly and cheered
whilst Chris covered his ears.
"Today begins the 2nd week since the
bulletin that we have not
gotten our fair share!" The speaker continued.
"I feel it is now time that we strike Edtacom Electronics!"
Again, loud cheers and claps.
The speaker droned on loudly, and totally
lost Chris who asked Jack and April what
this meant and that meant, but they only
answered 2 of his questions before telling
him to "just be quiet and listen".
Chris got totally lost so he began colouring
on the flyer that he was given when he came in,
he coloured a big purple dragon with green
boogers coming out of his nose, then Chris
got tired of drawing and got up from his
chair and wandered over to the refreshments
table and began eating doughnuts again,
slurping juice and when April and Jack came
over to get him, he burped loudly and giggled.
The speaker stopped and said:
"Excuse me, if you can't listen quietly
I must ask that you leave the meeting!"
Chris was more than happy to oblige and
headed for the door before Jack stopped him,
"Whoa, there cowboy!" "My name is CHRIS!"
Chris corrected him emphatically.
"Ok, ok," Said Jack to avoid a fuss,
"But you need to sit down and listen,
this is important! This is your FUTURE!"
Jack apologised to the speaker and
reassured him that Chris was under
control, so the speaker droned on.
But Chris was lost again and April
and Jack were not helping him understand
and so he begain rocking sideways in his
wobbly chair, making a prominent
continuous "donka-donka-donka" noise
and Jack said "Chris, do you want to end up
working for no money at all? Don't you care
about your future?"
"I want to fix things!" Protested Chris
"This is STUPID I HATE MEETINGS!"
he screamed and he kicked the wobbly
chair across the whole 20 feet
of the room, and ran out before
April or Jack could stop him,
and ran back to the work building
and back to his bench and cried.
Steve, his supervisor came by.
"Hey, Chris, are you OK buddie?"
"No!" Sobbed Chris, I hate Jack and
April and I hate stupid meetings!"
"Oh God no." Said Steve "Now they've got
you too!"
Chris looked up at Steve and said
"Don't let them get me--please."
"I'll see what I can do, Chris,"
Steve said without much hope. Would you
want to try some work or go
home for now?"
"Can I just go home, my tummie is
yucky."
"Yeah." Said Steve crunching out
a very short cigarette. "I hope
you're feeling better tomorrow."
He patted Chris on the shoulder and
for the first time ever since Chris
had worked there, he slowly plodded
out the door.
